Newell, “Newt” Kollath, 72 of West Point, died Thursday June 19, 2008 at Jackson County Hospital in Maquoketa, IA Services will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point with Reverend Richard Bringewatt and Reverend Kevin Cook officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 pm. atHill Crest Cemetery in Norfolk with military honors graveside. Memorials may be made to Optimists International or St. Paul Church. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm., Monday, at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point with family present 6:00 pm. until 8:00 pm. Those wishing to leave on line condolences may do so at www.stokelyfuneralhome.com. Newt was born February 21, 1936 in Norfolk to Ernest and Ida Brummels Kollath. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church at Hoskins and confirmed at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Newt graduated from Stanton High School with the class of 1954, and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. Newt attended Officers Candidate School in New Port, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy. He served active duty June of 1959 until June of 1962, stationed in Albuquerque, NM. After 16 years in the Navy Reserve, he retired as Commander. On August 11, 1962, he married Sandra Lockhart at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. The couple lived in West Point where Newt taught Vocational Agriculture at West Point High School from 1962 until 1966, worked in sales for Land O’ Lakes, and was a representative for Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent) for over 5 years. Newt was a card dealer at Winnevegas for over 9 years. Newt was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a 1975 charter member of the West Point Optimists club, serving as president, secretary/treasurer and as District Lt. Governor. He received many optimist awards including Optimist of the Year for the District 1979-1980. Newt was a lifetime member of FFA, was commissioned an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy and received the 2007 West Point Community Service award. Survivors include his wife, Sandra, of West Point, daughters Patricia (Bryan) Case of Maquoketa, IA and Kimberly (Greg) Wallace of Peoria, AZ, son Robert (Denise) Kollath of Columbus, brother Dean (Jeanine) Kollath of Stanton, sister VonDelle Heinold and sister in law Ella Kollath both of Pilger, grandchildren Alexis and Olivia Case, Madilynn and Zachary Wallace, Laci Kollath and Hannah Foust. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Wilbur (John) Kollath.
