Wilbert F. Throener, 90, of West Point, died Thursday, June 12 at the family farm near Monterey.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30am on Wednesday, June 18 at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Monterey with Reverend James Weeder as celebrant.  Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00pm with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00pm at St. Boniface Catholic Church.  Memorials may be made to St. Boniface Catholic Church.  Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home.

Wilbert Francis Throener was born on March 16, 1935 to Adam and Mary (Oligmueller) Throener on the family farm west of West Point. He went to St. Boniface Catholic School at Monterey, Nebraska through the 8th grade and then began farming with his dad and helping his uncle.

Wilbert joined the US Army in 1955, serving in Korea, until he was honorably discharged in 1957. Wilbert was proud to have served his country.

On October 1, 1957, Wilbert married Elizabeth “Liz” Ortmeier at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge. The couple farmed and raised their family near Monterey. He became a licensed electrician upon returning from the service and retained his license for nearly 30 years. He was a 4-H leader from 1971 to 1987 for the Monterey Cornhuskers and also a member of the American Legion.

Wilbert was a hard worker his entire life, from farming with his dad to running his own farm and later farming with his son, Duane. In 1982, he went to work at West Point Implement, retiring November, 2022 after 40 years. He enjoyed picking up parts from various locations and waiting for the UPS or the FedEx drivers to bring parts. Even after moving to West Point in October of 2005, he would go out daily to the farm to help. He was proud of the fact that he still combined beans and corn through the 2024 harvest. Wilbert enjoyed watching his grandkids and great-grandkids sporting events, along with a bag of popcorn, and attending their various programs.

Faith was important to Wilbert, he was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, served as a trustee, was a choir member for 74 years and served as an EME.

Wilbert was able to celebrate his 90th birthday in March, 2025 with an open house.  Being able to visit with many friends and family that he hadn’t seen for a long time made him extremely happy.

Wilbert leaves behind children Karen (Mark) Benne and Duane (Jenny) Throener of West Point and Randy (Bethany) Throener of Lincoln. Grandchildren include Ruth (Brian) Heller of West Point; Steve (Stacy) Benne of Thurston; Laura (Kirby) Fox of Concordia, Kansas; Deana Benne of Salina, Kansas; Jacie (Darrin) Eisenhauer, Keyden and Kyler Throener all of West Point; Alex and Ansley Throener of Lincoln, and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers: Ambrose & wife Shirley of Little Falls, MN, Lawrence & wife Mary of Columbus, NE and Marty of West Point; brother-in-law Harold Ortmeier of Blair and sister-in-law Deana Mark of Denver, CO and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded by his parents, wife, Liz, in 2018, son, James in 2003.
