Verena C. Mendlik, 83, formerly of Dodge, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Odyssey Hospice House in Elkhorn. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am. Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge with Monsignor Mel Wiese as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery. Christian Mother’s Rosary will be 3:00 pm. Wednesday and Public Wake will be 7:00 pm. Wednesday both at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm. at the church in Dodge. Those wishing to leave on line condolences may do so at www.stokelyfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or School or the Alzheimer’s Association. Verena was born October 7, 1925 on the family farm near Monterey in Cuming County to Henry and Anna Batenhorst Knobbe. She grew up on the farm and attended St. Boniface Catholic School. On September 23, 1948 she married Norman Mendlik at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Monterey. The couple lived in Dodge where Verena was homemaker and mother. The couple moved to Elkhorn in 2006. Verena was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 55 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a lifetime member of Christian Mothers. She enjoyed homemaking, especially sewing cooking and baking. Survivors include her husband, Norman of Elkhorn, daughters Barbara Scott of Fremont, Lois (Dan) Harris of Homer, Margaret “Meg” Bieberle of Topeka, Kansas, Geralyn “Geri”(Alvin) Kobes of Elkhorn and Theresa (Kevin) Cole Of Omaha, sons John of Lincoln, Jim (Joan) of Elkhorn, Paul (Patricia) of Waterloo, Steve (Chris) of Omaha, sisters Olivia Emmanuel and Dorothy (Wally) Nebuda both of West Point, margaret Witt of Columbus, LaVern (Richard) Faltin of Dodge, Joletta (Frank) Mejstrik of Norfolk, brothers Art (Dorothy), Richard (Marilyn) and Jerry (Theresa) Knobbe all of West Point, 25 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Dennis Knobbe and sister Rita Foy.
