Robert Edward “Bob” Smith, 63, of West Point died July 25, 2009 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 am. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Reverend Richard Bringewatt officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Tuesday with family present 5:00 until 7:00pm. With a Remembrance Service at 7:00 pm. all at Stokely Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the West Point Girl’s Softball Association. Bob was born January 11, 1946 at Norfolk to Malvern and Irene Lehmann Smith and was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Beemer. He attended Beemer public school graduating with the class of 1964 and graduated from Wayne State College in 1968. On October 23, 1971, he married Ardis Brockmann at St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point and they made their home in Kearney. Bob was a high school teacher and coach in the McCool Junction and Litchfield Public Schools from 1968 until 1977. While living in St. Paul, he worked as Sales Representative/District Manager with Moorman Feeds, then, Norco Feeds in West Point until 1996. Bob also farmed west of West Point for 18 years. Most recently he was a scheduler for Valmont Coatings in West Point, leaving in 2006 after 10 years, due to health concerns. As an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he served as Sunday school teacher, was on the Board of Education and Board of Elders. He coached girls’ softball many years, umpired softball games, kept books for WPPS basketball games and was instrumental in building the softball complex at Timmerman Park. Most important to Bob was his spiritual walk with the Lord, his family and their welfare, and the delight and blessings of grandchildren. He loved to play sheephead, dance a good Polka or Rock-n-Roll, take the grandkids fishing and enjoy the outdoors and the simplicities of life. Survivors include his wife, Ardie, of West Point, children Jason (Danelle) Smith of West Point, Kelli Slagle and Angie (Nicholas) Schnell all of Omaha, grandchildren Trey and Maverick Smith and Gage and Grant Slagle, sisters Ardath Pagels of Howell, Michigan, and Beverly Holtz of Louisville, Texas, brother Garry (Dorothy) Smith of Grand Island, step father Leland Kind of Beemer and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers and a sister Mary Behrendsen.
