Richard A. Knobbe was born on March 24, 1930, on the family farm near Monterey to Henry and Anna (Batenhorst) Knobbe. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and later Guardian Angels High School, where he was selected for Boys State before graduating in 1948.
On August 23, 1955, Richard married Marilyn Kulhanek at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Howells. Together they built a life centered around farming, family, faith, and fun. Richard enjoyed farming all his life—never shying from long hours and proudly working with his John Deere machinery. With Marilyn and their children at his side, he tended to the daily duties of the dairy farm while also raising hogs and feeding cattle. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic that has carried on through the generations.
Richard was active in his community and his church. He was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir. He served as president of the Central Catholic Booster Club, was a board member of Mid-America Dairy, and served on the school board at Central Catholic. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Cuming County Cattleman’s.
Richard and Marilyn shared a deep love for dancing, especially at the Vet’s Club. Their Wednesday and Friday night get-togethers with their special group of friends were treasured. Richard also had a fondness for western music, particularly the songs of Willie Nelson, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Richard and Marilyn traveled extensively. For 50 years, they enjoyed countless games of pitch with the Monterey Five. Family gatherings were always a priority, and Richard cherished every opportunity to be surrounded by those he loved. He never truly retired from farming, remaining active in the work he loved throughout his life.
To his grandchildren, Richard was nothing short of a legend. His stories, his values, and his example will continue to live on for generations.
