Orion Schulzkump, 84, of West Point, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 in Lincoln, NE. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point with Rev. Christian Meier officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 am to 8 pm Tuesday with family receiving friends from 5 pm to 7 pm Tuesday at Stokely Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements. Orion Edgar Schulzkump was born December 10, 1927 in Cuming County, NE on the family farm southeast of West Point to John P. Schulzkump and Anna Maria Maurer. He attended school at District 46, helped on the family farm, then served in the Army from 1946 to 1947 where he was stationed in Maryland serving as a medic. On May 25, 1949, Orion married Louise Goebel at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point. To this union two children were born, Judith and Susan. The couple celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in May 2012. In addition to his lifetime occupation of farming, Orion “Shorty” drove eighteen-wheelers, operated a maintainer in Cuming and St. Charles townships and sold Archer Oil, organic fish fertilizer and seed corn. He will be remembered for his many “inventions”, his jokes, his love for children and animals, especially goats and horses. He was a life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion for 36 years. He retired in October, 2010 when his health began to fail. Orion is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters Judy (Tim) thietje of Lincoln, NE and Susan Rosenbaum of Stromsburg, NE; grandchildren Tyler (Chrissy) Thietje, Justin (Megan) Cooksley, Maria Thietje, all of Lincoln and Kristin (Stanley) Draper of Firth, NE; great grandchildren Kasondra and Karissa Draper, Knox Cooksley, and Aubrie Thietje; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lawrence, Walter, Kenneth, Arland, Gordon, Amos, Delmer and Boyd; sisters LaVerna Hoffman and Delores Wiese.
