Melvin F.’Mel’ Greckel, 72, of Hubbard, formerly of West Point, died January 10, 2018 at his home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30am Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Reverend Steven Emanuel as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center. Visitation will be Sunday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm with a vigil service at 5:00pm at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point. Memorials will be directed to the family for later designation. Mel was born on August 10, 1945 in West Point to Leonard and Dorothy (Hudec) Greckel. He attended Guardian Angels Catholic School, graduating in 1963. In November 1963, Mel married Jean Feyerherm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. The couple divorced in 1969. On August 12, 1971, Mel married Karmen Tonjes at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bancroft. The couple divorced in 1990. Mel worked in the food service industry while living in Omaha from 1971 until 1991 when he moved to Hubbard. He retired in 2010. Mel was an avid card player and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his retirement, he enjoyed feeding and caring for the neighborhood cats. Survivors include his daughter, Sandy (Tom) Keck of Omaha; son, Darin (Debbie) Greckel of Omaha; sisters, Donna (Layne) Landanger of Council Bluffs, IA and Bev (Mark) Batenhorst of Omaha; grandchildren, Katie (Cory) Rohlfsen, Jon Keck, and Paige, Hunter and Pierce Greckel; great-grandchildren Greyson Packett and Charlotte Rohlfsen; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debby Greckel in 1974; and brothers Gary, Dan, and Ron.
