Marvin Ehlers, 85 of West Point, died Thursday, February 23, 2012, at West Point Living Center. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am. Saturday at Trinity Church with Reverend Nora Mendyk officiating. Burial at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until 8:00 pm. Friday with family receiving friends 4:00 pm. until 6:00 p. M at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Trinity Church or to Mount Hope Cemetery. Marvin was born April 3, 1926 at Wayne to Henry and Elsie Ritze Ehlers. He grew up in northeast Nebraska and graduated from Dixon High School. Marvin served with the Merchant Marines from 1942 until 1944, working as a cook on the ship. On April 11, 1948, Marvin married Bernadette Hanson at the Congregational Church in Allen. The couple lived in Phillip, SD and Hartington, moving to West Point in 1958. Marvin worked as a butter maker for the West Point Creamery and then for the City of West Point, retiring in 1991. On May 26, 1991, Marvin married Dorothy Jensen at Dakota Dunes, SD. Marvin was a member of Trinity Church. He enjoyed wood working, crafts, and traveling. Survivors include sons Marvin Dennis (Karin) of Yankton, Dr. William (fiancee Christine Haberern) of Avon, CT, Jeff (Kathy) and John both of Lincoln, sister Marian (Ivan) Creighton of Wayne. Grandchildren Christina (Jason) Sternhagen, David Ehlers and Andria (Torry) Buckner, great-grandchildren Grant and Andrew Sternhagen and Isaiah, Jamial, and Gabriel Buckner. He is preceded in death by his wives, Bernadette and Dorothy, brothers Ray, Melvin, Alvin, and Jim, and sister Laverne Thesenga.
