Marie Doris Scherer Smith, age 89, of West Point, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Brookestone Meadows in Elkhorn with her daughters by her side. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm. Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Trinity Church in West Point with Reverend Phil Fischer officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in West Point. Visitation will be Monday, April 1, 2013, from noon until 8 pm. at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point. Memorials may be made to Trinity Church or Nebraska Athletics. She was born April 11, 1923, in Belgrade, NE and was raised by her mother, Lena Irwin and her loving grandparents. She was a 1940 graduate of Belgrade High School, attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, and received a bachelor of arts in communication, with a minor in music, from the University of Nebraska in 1945. Marie married Dr. Robert Scherer in 1946 and the couple lived in West Point. He died in 1986. Marie then married Richard Smith in 1987. He died in 2008. During her life, Marie was an educator, scout leader, church organist, property manager, loving wife and mother. She enjoyed music, travel, golf, bird watching, Sodoku, Wheel of Fortune, playing bridge, art, friends, gardening, investing and sports. She grew up a St. Louis Cardinal fan, often wagering a nickel on the outcome. She was passionate about Husker athletics, particularly football. She was a member of Trinity Church, Kappa Phi, VFW Auxiliary, Hummel Club, Beef Club and Indian Trails Golf Club. Survivors include daughters Susan (Rick) Scherer Hicks of Sioux City, IA and Robin (Richard) Scherer Krapfl of Lincoln; granddaughter Megan (Brad) Hopp; grandsons Benjamin Chilcoat, Robert Krapfl and Ryan Krapfl; great-grandchildren Julius, Faith, Harrison and Evelyn Hopp; son-in-law Jack Chilcoat of Kansas City, MO; nephews Mike and John Irwin and niece Joann Sayegh. She was preceded in death by her mother Lena Irwin; husbands Robert Scherer and Richard Smith; daughter Jane Chilcoat and brother John Irwin. Stokely Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
