Lorene Steffensmeier, 86 of Dodge, died Sunday, January 8, 2011 at Creighton Hospital in Omaha. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge, Reverend Pat McLaughlin as celebrant. Visitation will be 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday at the Church. Christian Mothers Rosary with American Legion Auxiliary Rites at 3:00 pm and Public Wake at 7:00 pm Wednesday. Burial at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Memorials may to made to St. Wenceslaus Basement Renovation or St. Joseph Retirement Community Foundation. Stokely Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Lorene was born March 18, 1925 on the farm in Colfax County, near Howells, to William and Anna Kampschneider Vogel. She attended school at Sacred Heart Academy at Olean. Lorene, following the early death of her mother, helped raise her siblings. On January 4, 1950, Lorene married Nicholaus Steffensmeier at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Olean. The couple farmed south of Dodge. She was an active farmwife, helping with milking, raising large gardens and tending to small livestock. They retired into Dodge in 1983. Lorene was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge where she served as sacristan and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Altar society, Christian Mothers and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and knitting and taught herself to play the harmonica. Survivors include daughters Ann Marie (Allen) Luebbert of West Point, Alda (John) Nevole of Omaha and Geralyn (Fred) Smith of Klamath Falls, OR, sons Daniel of Omaha, Thomas (Cynthia) of Bellevue, Jeffrey (Patricia) of Lincoln, and John (Stephanie) of Kansas City, MO, sisters Lillian Franzluebbers of Dodge and Mary Ann (Ray) Tworek of Columbus, brothers Wilbert Vogel of West Point and Clarence (Dorothy) Vogel of Howells and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholaus in 1993, son Bernard in 1975, sister Odelia Peatrowsky , and brother Irvin Vogel.
