Leona Yarger, 87, of West Point, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at West Point Living Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday at Trinity Church with Reverend Nora Mendyk officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 am to 8:00 pm Thursday at Stokely Funeral Home with family receiving friends 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorials may be made to Trinity Church or Mount Hope Cemetery. Stokely Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Leona was born November 13, 1924 on a farm near Beatrice, NE to Elroy and Zella Barnard Thornburg. She attended Inavale country school and was a 1944 graduate of Beatrice High School. Following graduation she taught at 3 different schools over 6 years. On March 15, 1944 Leona married Franklin Lamont “Monty” Yarger at First Christian Church in Beatrice. The couple settled in West Point where they owned and operated Yarger Jewelry. Leona enjoyed working with the brides and semi-retired after 40 years of business. Leona was a member of Trinity Church, Trinity Guild and PEO. She enjoyed playing bridge, Square Dancing and tending to her flowers. Survivors include sons Larry of Albertville, MN and Jim (Brenda) of West Point, NE, brothers Dean (E’Linda) Thornburg of Beatrice, NE and Jim (LoIda) Thornburg of Beatrice, NE, grandchildren Joel Yarger, Abbie Yarger, Lindsy Wagner, Anthony Yarger, Rachel Williamsen, and Avery Yarger, and great-grandchildren Alana Williamsen, Kolbi Fagan and Weston Wagner. She is preceded in death by her husband Monty in February of 1997.
