Leona K. Engelmeyer, 89, of West Point, died Monday April 30, 2012, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Reverend Frank Lordemann as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until 5:00 pm Wednesday with Guild, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters Rosary at 1:30 pm at Stokely Funeral Home. Public Wake at 7:30 pm Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Stokely Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Guardian Angels Central Catholic Schools. Leona Kathryn Engelmeyer was born January 19, 1923 in West Point, NE to Chris and Rose (Schmitt) Hunke. The family moved to Beemer in 1927 where Leona attended school, graduating in 1941. She attended the School of Cosmetology in Omaha, and opened a beauty shop in Beemer in 1943. On August 20, 1945, Leona married Vincent Engelmeyer at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer. The couple lived in Seattle, WA until Vincent was discharged from the Coast Guard, when they returned to farm North of West Point, NE. Leona was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Guild, Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters of America. She served as an EMHC and lector at St. Mary’s, was Parish Council president, chairman for 1991 pictorial directory, and was a committee member on the stained glass window renovation and the Endowment Fund. She was the last living charter member for the VFW Post 4912. She was also a member of the Neighbor Makers and the ECA Alumni. She served as chairperson for St. Mary’s prayer line, was a caller for Red Cross and served on the board of St. Francis Memorial Hospital Foundation. Leona enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, glass etching, stained glass art, gardening, especially flowers, and crossword puzzles. She was an avid bowler and sports fan, loved Nebraska Cornhusker football and attended many games. Leona is survived by sons Bob (Mary) of West Point, Gerald of Omaha, Tom (Mary) of West Point and Ron (Deb) of Bloomington, IL; daughter Nancy (Bryan) Knobbe of West Point; sister Lori Casarietti of Newbury Park, CA; sister in law Mildred Grant of Cherokee, IA; grandchildren Rick (Marla) Engelmeyer, Mark (Lisa) Haase, Russ Engelmeyer all of West Point, Pat (Carrie) Coons of Omaha, Jenny (Chris) Allie of Georgia, Beth (Brent) Frerichs of Lincoln, Eric (Kassidy) Knobbe of Lincoln, Bryce (Jessica) Knobbe of Kentucky, Allyn (fiancee; Heather Beutler) Knobbe of West Point, Kelsey Knobbeof Lincoln, Emily Knobbe of West Point and Dylan Engelmeyer of Bloomington, IL, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Vince, parents, Chris and Rose Hunke, stepmother Margaret, brothers Leonard and Leon Hunke.
