Leander “Lee” Wellman, 91, of West Point died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend Gerald Gonderinger as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery at a later date. Wake services will be 6:00 pm. Friday at Stokely Funeral Home. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Friday at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Assoc. Lee was born August 8, 1918, on a farm near Humphrey to Francis “Frank” and Gertrude Wellman. He grew up and attended school there. On September 29, 1943, he married Wilma Schlautman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Lee and family operated a dairy farm north of Dodge and were members of St. Aloysius Catholic Church at Aloys. They moved to Snyder in 1977. Lee then did construction work with his son and enjoyed buying and selling cars. He served as the Snyder Village policeman and was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. In 2004 the couple moved to West Point. Lee was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. While being a trustee of St. Aloysius, he served on the committee to build Central Catholic High School. He enjoyed playing Pinochle, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife Wilma of West Point, daughters Marjorie (Kenneth) Batenhorst of West Point, Janet (Brian) Allison and Diane (Barclay) Hunt both of Lincoln, sons Jerry (Shelley) and Tom (Gloria) both of Beemer, Robert (Julie) of Spokane, Washington, Dennis (Connie) of Mead, David (Laurie) of Lincoln, and Mark (Shawna) of Columbus, sisters Gertrude Endres and Clara Schiller both of Hastings, MN, brothers Andrew (Florine) of Hampton, MN, and Francis (Susan) of Brainerd, MN, 36 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a sister Marcella Heiman, brothers Ray and Al and an infant brother.
