John Norton, 73, of West Point, died Saturday, November 13, 2010 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeral Services will be 1:30 pm. Tuesday at Stokely Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Curtis Hineline officiating. Burial with military honors at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Monday with family receiving friends 5:00 until 7:00 pm. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society Relay for Life or St. Francis Memorial Hospital Foundation. John Pick Norton was born May 6, 1937 at Clayton, GA, son of Mart and Sarah Speed Norton. He grew up and attended school there. As a young man, John moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. He enlisted in the U. S. Army July 21, 1955, and was discharged July 12, 1961. He remained with the Army Reserve until July 24, 1963. On June 5, 1963, John married Wahneeta Fay Barnes in Huron, SD. The young family moved to West Point in August of 1968. John worked in construction and maintenance for most of his life and had been employed by Iowa Beef Processing, West Point Living Center and West Point Public Schools. He retired in 1999. In retirement, John remained active with his carpentry skills and with taking care of various pet animals on his farm. John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his very special grandchildren. John was a member of West Point Baptist Church, West Point Sportsman Club and Modern Woodmen. Survivors include his wife, Wahneeta of West Point, sons Martin (Lisa) of Lincoln, and Maurice (Jeanette) Norton of West Point, daughter Malinda (David) Kempf of Dodge, grandchildren Lacy and Alex Norton, Elizabeth, Rachel and Rebecca Norton, Sarah, Julie, and Catherine Kempf, great niece and nephews Samantha and Gavin Norton, Jonathan and Jarett Norton. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Maurice, Jim, Earl, jane Roland, and a nephew, who he raised, Jeff Norton.
