John George Maas, 95 of West Point, died October 16, 2005 at the West Point Living Center. Services will be 10:30 am. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bancroft with Reverend Terry Daberkow officiating. Burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Church Building Fund. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:30 pm. Tuesday with family receiving friends 6:00 pm. until 8:00 pm. at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point. John was born May 8, 1910 on the farm south west of Bancroft to Carl and Matilda Munderloh Maas. He was baptized June 12, 1910 and confirmed April 13, 1924 at Zion Lutheran Church rural Bancroft. He attended the first few years of schooling at Uehling Public School, because English was spoken there. The remainder of his schooling was spent at Zion’s rural Bancroft. On January 25, 1940 he married Ruth Ortmann at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bancroft. The couple made their home and farmed eight miles west of Bancroft. After marriage, John joined St. Paul Lutheran Church. He served as and elder and was a member of the building committee when the educational wing was added to the church. John was a member of the District 21 school board and building committee when the new school was built. John enjoyed playing pool and reading. Survivors include a daughter Donna (LeRoy) Feldhaus of West Point, son Rodney Maas of Waterloo, brother Clarence Maas of West Point, grandchildren Sharon (Chuck) Inman of Plano, Texas, Donald (Kelli) Maas of Omaha, Ryan (Sandy) Maas of Elkhorn, Lorie (Steven) Prestyly of Williamsburg, Virginia, great grandchildren Summer, Cody and Jake Maas, Conner and Chelby Inman, and Katie Prestyly. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, November 27, 2004, his parents and sister Emma Jahnke.
