Joan Marie Hunke, 71, of West Point died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services for Joan will be held Saturday, May 30 at 10:30 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church, rural West Point (Monterey) with Rev. Norman Hunke officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, May 29 from 9 am to 5 pm at Stokely Funeral Home with a Public Wake at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point at 7:30 pm. Additional visitation after 7 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Point and one hour before mass at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Monterey. Burial will be at St. Boniface Catholic Church cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be given to Guardian Angels Library or St. Mary’s Life Teen. Online condolences may be made to www.stokelyfuneralhome.com. Stokely Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Joan was born September 16, 1937 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Chester and Jennie Gabrovshik Logan. Joan graduated from Catholic High School in Pueblo, Colorado and College of St. Mary’s in Omaha. On November 26, 1960, Joan married Hilbert Hunke in Pueblo, Colorado. The couple farmed near Monterey. Joan taught school in the early years, took time off to raise her family, and returned to teaching 4th grade at Guardian Angels Catholic School in West Point, later becoming librarian/media specialist. She had just retired in the spring of 2009 after 33 years. Joan was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church at Monterey. She enjoyed crafts and quilting, and was an avid “collector”. Joan and Hilbert enjoyed traveling, and she could always recommend a great book. Survivors include her son, Bernard (Lisa) Hunke of West Point and their daughters Kristina, Katie, Sara and Jessica, daughters, Maribeth Ulrich of Norco, California and her sons, Tyler and Adam, and Ann Marie (Craig) Recker, stationed in Guam, and their son, Steven, sisters, Doris (Aaron) Faltin and Arlene Logan of Omaha, and Ellen Mahoney of Pueblo, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hilbert, May 25, 2008, son, Gregg, in 1989, infant daughter, Mary Margaret, sister, Alice Cedars and her parents.
