Henry B. Popken, 85, of West Point, died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Frank Lordemann as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Wake with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be 7:00 pm Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be 9:00 am until 4:00 pm Thursday at Stokely Funeral Home and continue at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Central Catholic, Guardian Angels, or St. Joseph’s Retirement Community. Stokely Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Henry Bernard Popken was born July 14, 1924 at Webster to George and JosephineStegeman Popken andattended Guardian Angels Catholic School in West Point. Henry served with the US Army from January of 1945 untilApril of 1946. On May 27, 1947, Henry married Marjorie Lofgren at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. The couple farmed east of West Point, retiring in 1995 when they moved into town. Henry was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW and West Point Sportsman Club. He was a member of Cuming County Pork Producers and had served as a director for the Cuming County Cattle Feeders. Henry was a 4-H leader and enjoyed the County Fair. He was part of the Humble Hero’s group that went to Washington D. C. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include daughters Sharon (Tom) Mace, Janet (Glen) Ortmeier, Rita (Darrell) Bunn, and Mary Jo (Bob, Jr.) fredrickson all of West Point, and Jean Scherer (Scott) of Rapid City, South Dakota, sons Bruce (Karen) of Elkhorn and Robert of West Point, brothers George of Lincoln, Lavern “L. J.” (Lola) of Highlands Ranch, CO and Don of Ventura, CA, sister Carolyn Sorensen of Roselle, IL, 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie in May of 2005 and a brother Raymond.
