Helmut Martin, 81, of West Point, died Monday, April 02, 2012 at West Point Living Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 am. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church on the County Line with Vicar Jeff Schmitz officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Wednesday with family receiving friends 6 until 8 at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point. Memorials may be made to the church. Stokely Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Helmut was born December 5, 1930 in Friedersdorf, Germany to Louis and Martha Hanisch Martin. Helmut spent his youth in Germany. In April of 1952, Helmut immigrated to the United States, settling in the Scribner area where he lived and worked with his sponsor family. He served in the US ARMY from September 8, 1953 until August 2, 1955, stationed state side and in Germany. On January 6, 1957, Helmut married JohannaE. Schulz at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Dodge, Burt and Cuming Counties, moving into West Point in 1984, where Helmut continued to work at IBP. Helmut was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served on the council, Lutheran Brotherhood, and the VFW. He enjoyed gardening, wood working and playing cards. He loved his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife , Hanna, of West Point, daughter Karen (Tom) Elafros of Overland Park, KS, sons Ralph (Shelly) of Hooper and Dean (Julie) of Lincoln, grand children Jeff (Jessie) Martin, Michelle (Jason) Hauschild, Sarah, Michael, and Jessica Elafros, Braxton and Alex Martin, great grandchildren Will Martin and Brendan Hauschild, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alfred and Gunter
