Harold T. “Deke” Welding, 86, of West Point died Friday, June 12, 2009 at Good Samaritan Center in Scribner. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Reverend Joseph Broudou as celebrant. Cremation will follow and burial will occur at a later date. Wake service will be 7:00 pm. Monday at Stokely Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Monday at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Sunshine Senior Center. Harold was born September 25, 1922 at West Point to Carl T. and Louise Poeschl Welding. He attended Guardian Angels School and graduated from West Point Public High School in 1940. Harold served in the US Navy from April of 1943 until February of 1946. On December 12, 1946, he married Ina Welding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Deke worked for the West Point City Police Department starting in 1953, became a Deputy Sherriff in 1958 and served as Cuming County Sheriff from 1959 until 1988. He and Ina raised their family much of the time while living at the court house. Following his retirement, Harold served as a Cuming County Supervisor from 1991 until 2002. Harold was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion, VFW, and Nebraska Peace Officers. He enjoyed bird hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Ina, of West Point, daughter Cheryl Welding ofBellevue, sons Michael of Daphne, Alabama, Patrick of Omaha, Scott of Council Bluffs, iowa, Dan and Todd (Shelly) both of West Point and Kerry of Keller, Texas, sister Laverne Bailey of Omaha, grandchildren Stephanie (Jeff) McAtee, Brett and Seth Welding. He is preceded in death by daughter Mary in 1975, sons Mark in 1979 and John in 1994, granddaughter Marie Welding, and brothers Lloyd and Clifford Welding.
