Elveria M. Thietje was born on February 8, 1921, to Alfred and Mayme (Benne) Pagels on the family farm north of West Point. She attended Zion Lutheran School-rural Bancroft and graduated from West Point Public High School in 1938. Her high school athletic career forged a lifelong love of sports.
After high school, Elveria worked at Omaha Cold Storage in West Point. On September 25, 1940, she married Gordys “Butch” Thietje at Grace Lutheran Church. The couple farmed near Wisner before settling in West Point. Elveria enjoyed her life as wife and mother, later serving as the bookkeeper for Thietje Trenching Company. In 1972, she began volunteering with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. After the local chapter dissolved, she remained committed to serving those in need.
Her volunteerism extended to the West Point Living Center, where she called bingo along with other acts of service. She was a member and past president of the Women’s Izaak Walton League.
Elveria’s green thumb was evident in the yard filled with vibrant flowers and the windows of violets she nurtured. She found solace in nature and enjoyed walking to her destinations. Her passion for sports remained strong as she cheered on Husker volleyball, Royals baseball, and looked forward to every World Series game. Her love of baseball began with watching her cousins, the Benne baseball team, and that spark never dimmed.
Family gatherings full of homemade pies and cinnamon rolls were her hallmark. She and Butch shared a love of camping and winter travel to Texas and Arizona, embracing life on the road together.
