Donald A. Steffen, 79, of West Point, died Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point. Funeral Mass will be 10:30am on Tuesday, April 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Fr. Mark McKercher as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Visitation will continue Tuesday from 9:00am to 10:00am at Stokely Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Cemetery. Donald Allan Steffen was born at home on December 1, 1946, to Edmund and Ida (Harstick) Steffen. He attended Guardian Angels School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1965. In 1966, he joined the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1971.

On June 10, 1967, Don married Nancy Kaup at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Together they made their home and farmed north of West Point, where they raised their five children.

Farming was Don’s life’s work. He began farming at the age of 7 and continued throughout his life with his family operation. Although he spent short periods of time with the Cuming County Roads Department and the West Point Alfalfa Mill, farming was always where his heart was. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and served as an usher. Don was known for his strong work ethic, his love of family, and for being a smart ass to many. He enjoyed playing cards – especially sheep head, following his grandchildren’s sporting events and took great pride in all of the grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Nancy Steffen, and their children:

Gina (Bill) Hardisty, Omaha – Megan and Gabe

Adam (Kristie) Steffen, West Point – Cody, Dylan (Bridget), Kelsy, and Jesse

Sara Steffen, Bennington

Kelly (Ben) Dinslage, West Point – Myles, Charlie, Harper, and Rowen

He is also survived by his sister, Lavina Steffen; his brother, Leon (Joan) Steffen; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Ida Steffen.
