DeVerne Dean Smidt, 73, of West Point, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at West Point Living Center. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church with Reverend Christian Meier officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until 8:00 pm. Sunday, with family receiving friends 6:00 until 8:00 pm. at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to West Point Volunteer Fire Department. DeVerne was born January 15, 1934, at Wisner to Jesse and Olga Dostal Smidt. He attended West Point Public Schools. DeVerne entered the US Army in October of 1954. While stationed in England, he married Marlene Jenkins in Birmingham on August 20, 1956. Following his November 1962 discharge, DeVerne returned to West Point. He was employed as a lineman for the Rural Electric Association and for the Nebraska Department of Roads. In 1972 he purchased Smitty’s Tavern. On October 13, 1990 he married Betty Young. He retired in 2002. DeVerne was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, 40 year member of the Volunteer Fire Department, VFW and American Legion. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of West Point, daughters Jacque (Monte) Nybo of Concrete, WA, Sharon (Valen) Neesen and Karen (Danny) Breitkruetz both of West Point, son David (Machelle Jacob) Smidt of West Point, twin brother DeVerle (Claire) Smidt of West Point, step daughters; Vicky (Kenny) Krupka of Beemer and Debra (Richard) Feyerherm of West Point, step son Scott (Paula) Young of Beemer, grandchildren: Christopher (Brooke) Neesen, Philip, Ashley and Jesse Neesen, Lacy (John Rowell) Smidt, Cole Smidt, Anthony (Amy) Schenck, Jordan and Amy Breitkruetz, great grandchildren: Parker Neesen, Cole, Mason, and Abigail Wheeler, step grandchildren, Troy (Ann) Streeter, Travis (Sherri) Streeter, Dustin and Derek Feyerherm, Angela (John) Thillander, Brittney Krupka, Kelli (Jamie) Fleetwood, Jaclyn, Grant, Reilly, Madison, and Hannah Young, he is preceded in death by his wife Marlene in December of 1982, son Dean in July of 2006, sister and brother in law Georgene and Ed Remm, and his parents.
