Dean Smidt, 48, of West Point, died July 8, 2006 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10:00 am. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church with Reverend Don Olson officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 until 8:00 pm. Monday with family receiving friends 5:00 pm. until 7:00 pm. at the Funeral Home. A memorial has been established. Cremation will follow the funeral services. Those wishing to leave on line condolences may do so at www.stokelyfuneralhome.com. Dean was born June 19, 1958 at West Point to DeVerne and Marlene Jenkins Smidt. He attended West Point Public Schools graduating with the class of 1976 and attended business classes at Midland College in Fremont. On October 26, 1985, he married Kelly Jahn at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point. The couple moved to Fremont, before settling in Arlington where Dean owned and operated the Roof Top Bar. The couple divorced in 1994 and Dean returned to West Point. There, he took over the family business, Smitty’s Tap. On September 27, 2003 he married Bonny Poppe in West Point. In August of 2005 he began working at West Point Dairy. Dean was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he cooked for Church breakfasts. He was also a member of ABATE, American Bikers Aiming Toward Education. Dean enjoyed biking, fishing, camping, canoeing and his work. Survivors include his wife Bonny, of West Point, father and step mother, DeVerne and Betty Smidt of West Point, daughter Lacy Smidt of Arlington, son Cole Smidt of Arlington, step sons Shad and Brad Surman both of Elkhorn, sisters Sharon (Valen) Neesen and Karen (Danny) Breitkruetz both of West Point, brother David (Machelle) Jakob) smidt of West Point, half sister Jaque Nybo, mother-in-law Myrtle Poppe of West Point and a grandson Riley Surman. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marlene, in December of 1982 and his grandparents.
