Dean’Deano’ Gerths, 71, of West Point, died Sunday, August 28, 2016 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Memorial Service will be Thursday, September 1 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at Pebble Creek Cemetery at Scribner with lunch following at the Nielsen Center. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00pm to 7:00pm with a Wake Service at 7:00pm at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Dean Dale Gerths was born on December 14, 1944 to George and Agnes (Helgenberger) Gerths in Fremont. Dean grew up in Scribner and graduated from Scribner High School in 1962 where he played in the school band. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Wayne State College where he excelled on the football field as well. After college, he taught and coached at Hartington Cedar Catholic for two years. Dean was a very good athlete and had a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings before he blew out his knee. On November 11, 1971, Dean married Jane Decker at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. The couple made their home in West Point and Dean worked a variety of jobs including IBP, Madison Pork Plant, and Smeal Manufacturing. Dean was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing flag football, hunting, and fishing. He could be found refereeing flag football, umpiring softball, and attending the various sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid follower of Nebraska sports and the Nebraska athlete’s professional careers. Dean loved to collect sports memorabilia of his favorite athletes especially Joba Chamberlain, Danny Woodhead, and Nolan Ryan. In addition to his love of sports, Dean was an amazing artist. Survivors include his wife, Jane, of West Point; daughter, Mitz (Kyle Langhorst) Hittner of Fremont; sons, John (Heather) of Ottumwa, IA, Jay (Raven) of Fairbury, Flip (Michelle) of Elkhorn, and Bud of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren, Hunter Gerths, Taylor Gerths, Scooby Hittner, Scrappy Hittner, Bailey Gerths, Jaelin Gerths, Carson Gerths, Brock Beed, Connor Gerths, Gavin Gerths, River Gerths, and Knoxley Gerths; sister, Charlene (Tony) Fleischman of Tekamah; sister-in-law, Chrissy Gerths of New York; mother-in-law, Rita Ellinghausen of West Point; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Dean is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Dooley; and brother, Dutch Gerths.
