Cletus “Clete” John Brunnert, 69, of West Point died June 1, 2009 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeralservice for Cletus will be held Friday, June 5 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Rev. Frank Lordemann officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm with a Public Wake and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 pm at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Cletus was born in rural Dodge, Nebraska on August 31, 1939 to August and Anna (Heer) Brunnert. He attended District 57 School north of Beemer and St. Anthony Elementary School at St. Charles. In 1957, he graduated from Guardian Angels High School in West Point and as a young adult he attended Universal Trade School in Omaha studying automobile mechanics. Since then, he worked as an auto mechanic all of his life. He started his mechanic career working for West Point Motors and Walt Rief Auto before opening his own shop with Ralph Becker. In 1969, he proudly opened his own business, Brunnert Repair, and operated it until he became disabled in 1994. Cletus was a member of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, holding the office of Assistant Chief and various other positions. Cletus was a very active member in the community. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, was involved as a Boy Scout leader for Troup 165 for several years, belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a charter member of the Eagles F. O. E. He also served on the city park board and did extensive work building trails in Wilderness Park and was a member of the Cuming County Historical Society. On July 10, 1965, Cletus married Donna Gronenthal at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Platte Center, Nebraska and they lived their whole life in West Point. Survivors include his wife, Donna; children Peggy (Joel) Taylor, Beemer, Nebraska, David (Holly) Brunnert, Houston, Texas, Douglas (Kim) Brunnert, San Antonio, Texas, Mike Brunnert, Omaha, Nebraska, Lori (David) Shields, Council Bluffs, Iowa and Kevin (Sheila) Brunnert, St Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren, Emily, Zachery, Samantha, Seth and Nicholas Taylor, Haley, Ashley, Abigail and Lincoln Brunnert, Jasmine Shields, Caleb and Asher Brunnert. Other survivors include two sisters, Mary Ann (Robert) Schlickbernd, Beemer, Nebraska, Clarice Kaup, Omaha, Nebraska and one brother, Clarence (Janet) Brunert, Blair, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Brian.
