Bernard “Bernie” Allen Wieman was born on November 29, 1935, to Bernard and Christina (Schlautman) Eusterwiemann on the family farm in Stanton County north of Howells. Bernie’s life was one of faith, service, and dedication to his family and community.
Bernie attended country school and graduated from Howells High School in 1953. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country while stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland. After completing his military service, he pursued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two years.
In 1951, Bernie met the love of his life, Vera Brabec, at a dance in Howells. They were married on June 30, 1959, at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson, beginning a partnership that would span decades. Together, they farmed on the original homestead and raised livestock, with Bernie finding particular joy in feeding cattle.
Bernie enjoyed watching sports, cheering on his favorite teams, and meeting and conversing with people. Beyond his personal passions, Bernie’s life was marked by a commitment to his community. He was a leader, serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Commander of the Howells American Legion Post #155, and on the Howells Public School Board where he served as president, Howells High School Alumni Board, Howells Community Catholic School Board, St. Henry’s Cemetery Board, SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery Board, and more. His involvement extended to organizations such as Federal Land Bank, 8191 Pork Producers, and Platte Valley Cattlemen, where his leadership and dedication made a lasting impact.
A man of deep faith, Bernie was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he served as a lector, catechist, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. His faith and commitment to service were constants in his life, and he approached every role he took on with full dedication and enthusiasm.
