Bernadine Rief, 92, of West Point, died Thursday, September 6, 2007 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend Frank Lordemann as celebrant. A Rosary will be recited at 1:30 pm. Sunday by the St. Mary’s Guild and Christian Mothers and Public Wake services will be 7:00 pm. Sunday both at Stokely Funeral Home. Visitation will be 11:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Sunday at Stokely Funeral Home and 8:00 am. until 9:00 am. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Retirement Community. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s or St. Mary’s Endowments. Bernadine was born March 12, 1915 at St. Charles, NE to Meinolph and Anna Oligmueller Grewe. She attended St. Anthony’s School. While working as a hired girl north east of West Point, Bernadine met Casper F. Rief. They married June 1, 1938 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at St. Charles. The couple farmed north east of West Point with Casper’s brothers where Bernadine was an active farm wife. Following the death of her husband in 1984, Bernadine moved into West Point, near St. Mary’s Church. In 1993 she moved to St. Joseph’s Retirement Community. Bernadine was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guild, and Christian Mothers. She was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed quilting, playing Pinochle and Pitch, but was most proud of her gardens, especially her flowers. After moving to town she tended the flowers at St. Mary’s. Bernadine was a cancer survivor. Survivors include daughters; Carolyn (Bob) Michaelis of West Point, Phyllis (Dan) Rosloniec and Mary (Bob) Foley both of Omaha, and Bernita (Tom) Chaput of Carlisle, IA, sons; C. Tom (Sharon) Rief and Loren (Shirley) Rief both of West Point, brother Art (Etta) Grewe of Casa Grande, AZ, 26 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, sister in laws Madalin Rief and Edna Kappius both of West Point. She is preceded in death by her husband, Casper, in 1984, sisters Lila Strehle, Magdalen Rief and Theresa Hagedorn and brother William Grewe.
