Arlene May Maly, 83, formerly of Lincoln, died November 4, 2008 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Scribner. Memorial services and burial at Clarkson National Cemetery will be at held at a later date. Stokely Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of arrangements. Arlene was born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925 in Howells, Nebraska to Agnes (Koci) and Joe Maly. When she was about 5 years old she moved with her family to David City, Nebraska where she spent most of her childhood. The family moved to Lincoln when Arlene was in high school where she graduated from College View High School in 1943. Arlene worked in the State Legislature for over 10 years, most of that time as secretary for State Senator, Hugo Srb. In late 1950’s she returned to school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she graduated in 1961 with a BS in Education. After receiving her Teaching Certificate she taught Junior High Social Studies in Hastings and Columbus. About 1970 Arlene returned to the Legislature where she worked in the State Ombudsman Office as an administrative assistant until her retirement in 1987. She also taught GED classes at Southeast Community College in Lincoln and was especially proud of her work with Vietnamese & Laotian immigrants. She lived most of her adult life in the College View area of Lincoln and was an active member of South Gate Methodist Church and of Calvert Senior Center. She moved to Good Samaritan Center, Scribner, NE in March 2003 after her health began to fail. She loved history and politics, enjoyed reading, especially historical novels, biographies, and the daily newspaper, attending plays & other cultural events, and meeting friends for lunch. She was the care giver in the family, at one time or another caring for her father, mother, and sister during their illnesses. She was also best friend, teacher, and supporter for her nieces, nephew, great-nieces & nephews. Survivors include Nieces, Joellen (David) Burmood of West Point and Nancy Weber of Lincoln, Nephew Charles (Susan) Safarik of Lincoln, Great nephews Matthew (Kit) Burmood and Marcus Burmood, great nieces Amy (Steve) Lutt, Sarah Safarik, Laura Safarik, and Christina Weber, and great-great niece & nephew Ema and Brody Lutt. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Helen (Mrs. Joseph) Safarik.
