Alverna Emma Caroline Engelbart, 87, of West Point, died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10:30 am. Tuesday, at St. Paul Lutheran in West Point with Reverend Terry Daberkow officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Monday with family present 5:00 pm. until 7:00 pm. at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family choice. Those wishing to leave on line condolences may do so at www.stokelyfuneralhome.com.Alverna was born April 28, 1921 on the family farm south west of Bancroft in Cuming County to Christian and Caroline Pagels Jahnke. She attended Zion Lutheran School and was a 1940 graduate of West Point Public School. On November 9, 1941, she married Harold Engelbart. While Harold served in the military, the couple lived in Le Mesa, California where Alverna worked as a secretary for the Selective Service. Alverna returned to north east Nebraska before the birth of the couple’s first child. The couple farmed north of West Point until 1963 when they moved into West Point. Alverna worked for West Point Public High School as the principal’s secretary for nearly 20 years. Alverna was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, baking and playing cards. Survivors include daughters Jean Bowman of Omaha and Jody (Mike) Lindberg of Lincoln, sons John (Jean of West Point, Joel (Connie) of Elkhorn and Jim of Fontana, California, sisters Laura Zimmerman and Lenora Jahnke both of West Point, grandchildren Jon (Libby) Engelbart, Mark (Michelle) Engelbart, Ryan Bowman, Aaron Engelbart and Leah Engelbart, great grandchildren Jonathan, Nolan, Jake, Tyler and Blake Engelbart. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in July of 2005, grandson Brent Bowman, sisters Luella Kollmorgan, Gertrude, Dora and Caroline Jahnke, brothers John and Donald Jahnke.
