Alfons Baumert, 93, of West Point, died Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at West Point Living Center. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend Gerald Gonderinger as celebrant. Burial with military honors at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Wake service 7:00 pm. Monday at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorial visitation noon until 8:00 pm. Monday at Stokely Funeral Home. Alfons Bernard Baumert was born March 1, 1919 on the family farm near Aloys, NE to Frank and Catherine Schrage Baumert. He attended St. Aloysius Catholic School. Alfons worked in communications while serving in the US Army during WWII, 1942-1945, and was stationed in the South Pacific Theater. On February 27, 1946, Alfons married Christina Meister at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Monterey. The couple farmed south of Dodge, moving into West Point in 1960. Alfons worked various jobs, before retiring from the State Department of Roads. Alfons was a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and VFW. He was an avid reader, kept up with current world events and politics. He enjoyed working in his yard and garden and tinkering on anything in his garage. Survivors include children; Daniel H. (Ilene) Baumert of Fremont, Lois Williams of Suffern, NY, Mary (Bryan) Downey of Fremont, Janet Baumert and Cathy Baumert both of West Point, sister Mildred Emanuel of North Bend, brother Marius (Mary) Baumert of West Point, sister-in-law Kathleen Baumert of Clarkson, brother in law Gene Minarick of Scribner, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, preceded in death by his wife, Christina, in March of 2011, parents, brothers Hubert and Paul, sister Mary Minarick and son-in-law Bob Williams.
