Wilbert Vogel, 90, of Howells, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Merrick Manor in Fremont. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Howells with grandson Reverend Kevin Vogel and Reverend Leo Rigatuso concelebrating, assisted by Deacon Bill Schlautman. Burial will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited 3:00 pm. Monday and Vigil Services at 7:00 pm. Monday, both at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be 2:00 pm. until wake time Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to Howells Community Catholic Schools, Howells Ballroom, Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Olean, or Howells Rescue. Stokely Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Wilbert was born, the oldest of seven children, October 13, 1922 in rural Colfax County to William and Anna (Kampschneider) Vogel. He attended Sacred Heart Academy in Olean. On August 24, 1949, Wilbert married Veronica Gentrup at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer. The couple farmed near Howells until 1982 when they moved into Howells. Wilbert resided at his home in Howells until September, 2011, when he moved to St. Joseph Retirement Community in West Point, then in June, 2012, to Merrick Manor in Fremont. Wilbert was an active member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus. He and Veronica were active in several community organizations. They cared for the sanctuary at Saints Peter and Paul Church, cleaned and arranged flowers, made sure the church was locked and unlocked, and counted Sunday collection money. Wilbert received the 100 year Pioneer Farm Family award and the FFA Farmer award. Survivors include his daughter Rose Ann (Francis) Sindelar of Grand Island, sons Kenneth (Carol) Vogel of Clarkson, Gerald (Linda) Vogel of Norfolk, James (Mary Jean) Vogel of Lincoln, Dale (Jolene) Vogel of Howells, 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, sisters Lillian Franzluebbers of Dodge, and Mary Ann (Ray) Tworek of Columbus, brother Clarence (Dorothy) Vogel of Howells, brother-in-law Donald Peatrowsky of West Point, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Veronica, in July of 1998, brother Irvin, sisters Lorene Steffensmeier and Odelia Peatrowsky, brothers in law Nick Steffensmeier and Barney Franzluebbers, and a grandson.
