Nora was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Leonard (Ace), Charles, Bernadette, Rita, Loretta, John, Mary, Gerald, Richard, and Winifred. She is survived by two of her sisters: Oliva and Ruth. Her Catholic faith was very important to Nora throughout her life and in her recent years she attended Saturday evening Mass at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital Chapel. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a graduate of Steinauer High School in Steinauer, NE in the five-person class of 1953. Following her high school graduation, Nora moved to Lincoln and worked for a life insurance company. She met her husband Ambrose in November 1955 at a dance at the Lincoln Air Base as part of the Lincolnettes social group. Ambrose was finishing his military service in the Air Force at that time. Ambrose and Nora became engaged on Mother’s Day 1956 and were married on August 11, 1956 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Steinauer, NE, nine months after they met. They were married for 66 years prior to Ambrose’s passing in 2022 and enjoyed many activities including traveling together. Nora and Ambrose made their home in West Point, NE where they raised their family. They have four children: Duane (Mary) Hugo, Nancy (Chris) Cady, Jolene (Andy) Schack, and Keith (Linda) Hugo, nine grandchildren: Stacy (Dan) Sveen, Jessica (Nick) Howell, Mark (Kate) Hugo, Abbey Hugo, Eric Schack, Steven Schack, Andrew Schack, Thomas Hugo and Cynthia (Jacob) Siedschlag and seven great grandchildren: Braxton Sveen, Beckham Sveen, Blake Sveen, Wesley Howell, Adelynn Howell, Hendrix Howell, and John Hugo. When Nora’s youngest son Keith started kindergarten, Nora returned to the working world as a utility billing clerk for the City of West Point. Nora continued in this position until her retirement after 48 years. She was also active in many social activities including serving as a past president of the VFW Auxiliary to Post #4912, secretary of the Cuming County Historical Society, St. Mary’s Parish Council, Catholic Daughters, Christian Mothers, St. Francis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Troop Leader for her daughters’ Girl Scout Troops. Most of all, Nora enjoyed spending time with her family, especially during holidays. Nora was known for always remembering birthdays and making sure the cards arrived in time for the birthday. She was an avid reader of historical fiction books and was a devoted fan of Husker volleyball, basketball, and football teams. The family would especially like to thank her care team from Home Instead for their compassionate care and companionship which allowed her to stay in her home where she was happiest. Nora will be deeply missed by her family and friends. |
