Larry L. Kampschneider, 80, of West Point, died Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at CHI Lakeside Hospital in Omaha.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30am on Friday, December 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Rev. James Weeder as celebrant.  Burial with military honors will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center.  Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Memorials may be made to GACC Endowments or Franciscan Healthcare Foundation.  Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home.

Larry Lee Kampschneider was born on February 25, 1944, in a barn on the family farm north of Dodge—yes, in a barn, and he was proud of it— to Leonard and Roma (Bart) Kampschneider. It’s safe to say he came into the world with character, and he never lost it.

Larry attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and graduated from Dodge High School in 1962. After high school, he joined the Army Reserves, where he served his country and honed his culinary skills as a cook, ensuring no one under his watch ever went hungry (though they may have been served liver and onions).

On April 29, 1967, Larry married Patricia Burger at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Snyder. Together they built a life in West Point, where Larry worked at Wimmer’s Meat Products for 52 years, working his way up the ladder with dedication and hard work. Larry was known for his love of golfing, gardening, and playing cards, especially poker and hearts. His humor and quick wit were a constant source of joy for those around him.

Larry was deeply committed to his faith and his community. He was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and served on the St. Mary’s Parish Council. He helped found the Franciscan Healthcare Foundation and spearheaded numerous fundraising drives for St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Franciscan Healthcare, and most recently, St. Joseph’s Hillside Villa.

Larry’s favorite meals included liver and onions and radish sandwiches—dishes that reflected his simple and authentic approach to life. He was generous, always ready to lend a hand or share a joke. Larry recently said, “I give a lot. I’m the best giver ever.” And he truly was, whether he was giving his time, his money, or a good-natured ribbing.

Larry is survived by his wife, Patty, of Omaha; children, Cynthia Stremick, Chad (Cat) Kampschneider, and Christie Kampschneider all of Omaha; grandchildren, Blaine, Derek, Cody, and Brynley Stremick, Pryce Kampschneider, Braxton Murray, and Daniel, Hannah, and Eve Green; sisters, Carol (Mike) Weber, Shirley Ulrich, and Diane Kampschneider; and brother-in-law, Erv Steffen. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marlene Kampschneider and Donna Steffen; brother, Lumir Kampschneider; and brother-in-law, Roland Ulrich.
