James Douglas Strehle was born on February 24, 1926 to Clemant and Helen (Poeschl) Strehle in West Point. He attended Guardian Angels School which at the time did not have a football program. Because of this, Jim enrolled himself at West Point Public High School without his mother’s knowledge and joined the football team. He graduated in 1944. After high school, Jim served in the United States Navy as a gunner. He was stationed aboard many vessels and served around the world during World War II. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Jim returned to West Point as an electrical lineman. On December 27, 1950, Jim married Darlene Henry at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Jim owned Strehle Café for seven years before becoming a US Postal Service Clerk for almost 40 years.

Jim was member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, and the first president and charter member of the Bluejay Booster Club. He was on the Board of Directors for the West Point Community Theater, a member of the American Legion Post #70 and VFW Post #4912, and past president of the West Point Lions Club. Jim was known as the voice of Central Catholic and West Point Public High School football games. He started as spotter in the booth before moving to public address announcer for a total of 58 years ending in 2007. For that service, he was recognized in 2008 with the Nebraska Schools Activities Association Outstanding Service Award. Jim enjoyed playing golf and attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene of West Point; children, Ann Strehle (Barb Skurdal) of Beulah, MI, Greg (Rita) Strehle of West Point, and Jane (Gene) Parks of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. Jim is preceded in death by his siblings, Leroy (Patty) Strehle and Helen (Ross) Dill; and grandson, Nathan Parks.
