Faye Nitz, 98, of Beemer, died Monday, January 28, 2019 at Colonial Haven in Beemer. Memorial services with military honors will be 11:00am on Friday, February 8 at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point with Reverend Priscilla Hukki as officiant. Lunch with visitation will follow the service in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the American Veterans Park in West Point, Friends of Baron (Nebraska Veterinary Services), or donor’s choice. Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home. Faye J. Nitz was born on June 22, 1920 to James and Fayetta (Goho) MacMannis in Philadelphia, PA. She was raised in Pitcairn, PA by her mother and grandfather, Foxie. Faye studied dance for 12 years in Pittsburgh at a studio one block from the studio run by Gene Kelly’s family. What could have been? She graduated from Pitcairn High School and the nursing program at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. When WWII began, Faye enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and served with the 120th Station Hospital in England, France, and Germany. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living veteran in Cuming County. Before deploying to England, she met a Nebraska boy named Ed Nitz at Indiantown Gap, PA where he was recuperating from knee surgery sustained in a pick-up football game before he was sent overseas. Throughout the war they were frequently stationed near each other and became engaged in London. The ring came from West Point chosen by his mother and sister and mailed to him in a wooden bandaid box. They were married in 1946 in Pittsburgh and moved to Nebraska. Faye worked as a nurse in Wayne while Ed finished his college degree. They moved to West Point in 1948. She worked as a surgical nurse at St. Francis Memorial Hospital for 25 years. She loved cats, dancing, swimming, and shopping and she hated snakes. Faye will be missed by all who loved her and her unique sense of humor. Faye is survived by her four children, Diane Nitz of West Point, Shelley (Jerry) Wellman of Beemer, Terry (Lori) of Omaha, and Maureen Nitz of Kearney; grandchildren, Eric and children Lexus and Jordan, Bryan (Melanie) and daughters Aubrey and Bryleigh, Greg (Lisa) and sons Elijah and Micah, and Tim (Colleen) and children Savannah, Beckett, and Maverick; sister-in-law, Emma MacMannis; cousin, Susan (Larry) Cook and many nieces and nephews. Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Edward; parents; brother, George MacMannis; and sister, Betty MacMannis.
