Donald L. Smeal, 84 of Snyder, died October 19, 2004 and St. Francis Memorial hospital in West Point. Don was born November 17, 1919 at Snyder to Lawrence and Ethel Patchen Smeal. He attended schools at Dist. 45, St. Leos and Snyder High School. In October of 1941 he married Ardath Renter at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Don inducted into the U. S. Army on Jan. 9, 1942 and served in Africa and Europe. He was discharged on Aug. 23, 1945. After the service, Don started with custom farming and trucking. Then in 1949 became manager of West Point Feed Products Co. at West Point. On January 1, 1955 He started Smeal Farm Equipment that later bloomed into Smeal Manufacturing. He remained President until the early 1990’s. Don was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church of Snyder, West Point Knights of Columbus, American Legion at Dodge, and was a Volunteer Fireman. Survivors include his wife Ardath of Snyder, daughters Marlynn (Virgil) Hunke, Renee Smeal, lowene (Gary) Hasemann, and Lori(Jeffrey) Scherer all of Snyder, Ellen (Myron) Gross-Rhode of Omaha, Mary Lou (Jim) Tomka of Lincoln, and Denise (Rod) Cerny both of Omaha, sons, Delwin (Vicki) of Snyder and Jay (Angie) of Lincoln, brother Ray (Arlene) of West Point, sister Eileen (Tony) Bose of Snyder, sister in law Loretta Smeal of Snyder, 30 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents brother Bill, and brother-in-law Raymond Renter. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am. Friday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Snyder with Reverend Norman Hunke and Reverend James Brown as con-celebrants. Wake services with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 Thursday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Snyder. Burial will be with military honors at St. Leo’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Don Smeal Memorial. Visitation will be 8:00 am. until noon Thursday at Stokely Funeral Home and from 1:00 until 8:30 pm. Thursday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Snyder. Or you may sign the register book at www.stokelyfuneralhome.com. Stokely Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
