Donald J. Burger, 86, of West Point, died Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30am on Thursday, February 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Rev. Steve Emanuel as celebrant.  The funeral will be live streamed on the Stokely Funeral Home Facebook page at facebook.com/stokelyfuneralhome.  Burial with military honors will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center.  Visitation with family present will be Wednesday from 5:00m to 7:00pm with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Masks will be required at the visitation and funeral and seating will be socially distanced by household.  Memorials made be made to the family for future designation.  Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home.

Donald John Burger was born on February 23, 1934 to Henry and Josephine (Meister) Burger in West Point.  After graduating from Guardian Angels in 1952, Don joined the United States Army.  He was stationed in Ft. Bliss, TX and New York City before being honorably discharged in 1955.  New York City was a favorite assignment for Don because it allowed him to watch his favorite baseball team – the Dodgers.  On November 10, 1959, Don married Lois Popken.  The couple lived in West Point where Don worked as a salesperson for meat distributors for 40 years.    On August 14, 2009, Don married Janet Mallardi.

Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus for over 50 years.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post #70 for 60 years.

Don is survived by his wife, Janet, of West Point; daughters, Deb (Mike) Parr of Columbus, Jody Wiechman of West Point, Mary Herian of Albion; son, Ryan (Sheila) Burger of Lincoln; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Alice Matthews of Aurora, CO; sister-in-law, Lorraine Burger of West Point; and many nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his first wife, Lois; son, Jon David; brother, Thomas; brother-in-law, Paul Matthews; and sons-in-law, Rick Herian and Dave Wiechman.
