Boyd Baer, 94, formerly of West Point, died Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Whispering Winds Cottage in Beatrice.  Memorial service will be 11:00am on Thursday, July 23 at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point with Rev. Priscilla Hukki as officiant.  Seating will be physically distance by household and masks will be required.  The funeral service will be live streamed on the Grace Lutheran Church Facebook page at facebook.com/gracewestpoint.  Burial with military honors will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the church hall.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm with family receiving friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point.  Memorials may be made to the American Veterans Park.  Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home.

Boyd Lewis Baer was born on March 5, 1926 to Benjamin and Nell (Donohoe) Baer in Decatur.  He grew up in Bellwood where he worked many jobs from milking cows to delivering the Omaha World Herald newspaper.  Boyd graduated from Bellwood High School in 1944.  Boyd received his draft notice before his graduation and was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps immediately out of school.   He served in the European Theater during World War II where he was stationed in Linz, Austria as a crew chief of a P-61 night squadron.

After being honorably discharged, Boyd ended up in David City working for the gas company for 27 years.   He was eventually made the service superintendent of the Northeastern District.  In 1949, Boyd married Peggy and the couple had two children – Daniel and David – and Peggy’s daughter Rebecca.  The couple later divorced.  Later, Boyd married Leola Horacek and the couple had two children – Roger and Jenise.  The couple later divorced.  Boyd ended his career with Nucor Steel – retiring in 1991. On January 1, 1984, Boyd married Kathleen Wagner in West Point.

Boyd was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in West Point.  While living in David City, he was a member of the Jaycees where he served as president.  He was also the Chief of the David City Fire Department for 6 years.  Boyd loved everything about the outdoors.  He could be found hunting or fishing or pulling his camper across the countryside with his wife, Kate.  Dancing and playing cards were also favorite activities.

Boyd is survived by his children, Daniel (Nancy) Baer of Winside, David Baer of Elmwood, Roger (Terri) Baer of Branson, MO, Jenise (Scott) Erikson of Beatrice, and Rebecca Duhr of Fairbanks, AK; stepchildren, Rodney (Cindy) Wagner of West Point, Kevin (Dianne) Wagner of Fairbury, and Vicky (Nettie) Wagner of Carlsbad, CA; and stepdaughter-in-law, Margaret Wagner of West Point; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.  Boyd is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kate; siblings, Donna Stephens, Bertha Rauscher, Lloyd Baer, Ina Lou Bohuslavsky, and Daniel Baer; and stepsons, Jim Wagner and Al Wagner.
