Betty Stewart, 89, of West Point, died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point.  Memorial service will be 10:00am on Tuesday, October 5 at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point with Rev. Robert Schilling as officiant.  Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery with lunch following at the Eagle’s Club.  Visitation will be from 9:00am to 10:00am prior to the service.  Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.  Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home.

Betty Jean Volquardsen Stewart was born on July 5, 1932 to William and Alvina Volquardsen of rural Lindy.  Betty was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lindy.  She was the second youngest child in a family of five brothers and one sister.  Her siblings include brothers, Harold, Alvin, William, Robert, and Richard and sister, Ida-Marie Volquardsen Jones.  Betty’s post-secondary education was obtained at Wayne State College where Betty earned her teaching degree.  She was one of the first students to stay at the dorms at Wayne State.  Betty taught country school for a short time between the Hartington and Bloomfield area.

Betty married Melvin “Max” Eugene Stewart on May 18, 1952 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lindy.  Together they shared over 60 years as husband and wife and had six children that they loved and raised.

Betty had her own business cleaning houses, carpets, and furniture in and around the West Point area for offices and private residences for a number of years.  During the same time, she worked at the REA as the janitor.  Betty was a den leader for cub scouts and enjoyed helping the boys earn their merit badges.   Betty and Max loved playing cards and as the kids got older, they passed this love onto some of them.  She kept a love for the farm life even while the family lived in town, raising their own chickens to butcher which the whole family got in on.  Betty loved a good cookbook and had too many to count.  When she retired, Betty would often look through the cookbooks searching for different recipes to try.  She also loved flowers and there is quite a bit of variety in her yard to include yellow roses from Spencer, NE in her front yard.

Betty is survived by her children, Charmaine Acree (Mike) of Beatrice, Cheryl Dietrich (Scott) of Leigh, Russell Stewart (Thereasa “Terri” Hashberger) of Wamego, KS, Susan Robinson of West Point, Keith Stewart (Silvia Schmidt) of Zweibrucken, Germany, and Jeff Stewart (Heather Posvar) of West Point; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her husband and daughter-in-law, Michaela Beckman.
