Bernadine Tobey was born on March 2, 1936, in Wahoo to Bernard and Anna (Machovec) Chapek. Growing up in Wahoo, Bernadine graduated from Wahoo High School in 1953. During her school years, she worked hard, waiting tables at a local café over the lunch hour, and later, she became a legal secretary for the county attorney. On September 30, 1961, she married Allen Tobey at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Their journey together took them to Lincoln, where they lived for five years before settling in West Point in 1966.
As a homemaker, she lovingly sewed her children’s clothing, decorated cakes, baked bread and rolls from scratch, and tended to a large garden. Despite facing significant health challenges, including polio as a child, rheumatoid arthritis, and macular degeneration, Bernadine never let adversity define her. She carried on without complaint, ensuring her family was always cared for and that her children had everything they needed.
Bernadine was a woman of deep faith guiding her family with love and grace. After Allen’s passing in 1998, Bernadine found new hobbies that brought her joy, including collecting Beanie Babies and exploring her family’s genealogy.
Survivors include her children, Mike (Patsi) of Lincoln, Pat (Patty) of Norfolk, Susie (Scott) Petersen of Omaha, and Greg (Craig) of Olathe, KS; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Martha (Garth) Hengen of Mesa, AZ; and brother-in-law, Roger Matuska of Livermore, CA. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; and siblings, Mary Ann (Vennie) Kavan, Wilma Matuska, and Ernie (Marie) Chapek.
