Arlin M. Feyerherm passed from this life on January 7, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital in West Point, NE. Funeral services will be 10:30am on Saturday, January 12 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point with Rev. Richard Bringewatt as officiant. Burial will be at West Side Cemetery with lunch following at the church hall. Visitation will be Friday from 12:00pm to 7:00pm with family receiving friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated for the St. Paul Lutheran School or the Arlin Feyerherm Distinguished Speakers Fund (Kansas State University Foundation/Dept. of Statistics). Arrangements by Stokely Funeral Home. Arlin was born May 21, 1925, in West Point, NE, to Fred and Ida (Kuester) Feyerherm. Arlin spent his childhood on the family farm east of West Point as the youngest of seven children. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School through 8th grade and graduated from West Point High School (WPHS) in 1943. Upon graduation, he spent 6 months in the Navy V12 program at Doane College. He was selected for an accelerated NROTC program at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1946 as an ensign in the Navy with a degree in Naval Science and Tactics. The war ended, and he pursued a Master’s degree in Mathematics at Iowa University, graduating in 1948. He taught mathematics for two years at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, MO. Arlin completed his Ph. D. in Mathematics with a minor in Statistics from Iowa State University in 1952 and taught classes there for a year. Arlin and Junavae Henry, a fellow WPHS graduate, reconnected on New Year’s Eve of 1950 and were married on August 25, 1951, while Arlin was still a doctoral student. In the fall of 1953 they moved to Manhattan, KS, for Arlin to teach in the Department of Mathematics at Kansas State University (KSU). Carol, Joan, and Roger were born over the next seven years. In 1959 Arlin was one of three faculty members who formed the Department of Statistics at KSU. This provided him the opportunity to consult with other disciplines, particularly with faculty in the College of Agriculture and to publish in applied journals. Much of his later research was related to weather and wheat yields as he worked with NOAA and NASA satellite data. Arlin and Junavae were active members of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Manhattan. He served for many years as the Sunday School Superintendent and as an elder on the church council. His work, family, and church were his primary pursuits. Arlin retired in 1993 after forty years of teaching. The retirement years included travel and time to enjoy grandchildren or to play a round of golf. In 1999 Roger built Arlin and Junavae a new home in his neighborhood in Lenexa, KS. Junavae preceded Arlin in death in July, 2008, after an extended illness. From that time on, he helped in the Feyerherm Construction office and worked on his statistical model involving wheat yields of new breeds of wheat using data from ten universities in the Great Plains. Each spring and fall until 2018, he would produce a report on the new breeds for the wheat breeders. In addition, he was faithful to working out daily, a practice which he credited with his health and longevity, and he was an avid sports fan, wearing purple proudly. In May 2016 Arlin moved back to West Point, NE, to be near his daughter Joan who is a Physician Assistant. He was back’home’ and able to enjoy his great-grandchildren. He continued his exercise and made many new friends with his friendly ways and his great interest in other peoples’ stories. He has been much loved by his family and has served as a wonderful role model to all – kind, generous, and principled. His faith was a bedrock of his life and is a comfort to his family. Arlin is survived by his children: Carol (Rick) Beier of Stillwater, OK; Joan (Jim) Yosten of West Point, NE; and Roger (Sarah) Feyerherm of Shawnee, KS; eight grandchildren: Matthew and John Beier, Andrew (Jill), Daniel (Kerri), David, and Mark Yosten, and Anna and Mitchell Feyerherm; and three great-grandsons: Drew and Jaxon Yosten, and Braxton Yosten, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Junavae, his parents, and siblings: Earl of Sunnyside, WA, Victor (Peg) of Yakima, WA, Ella (Martin) Zobel of Bancroft, NE, Leo (Lenore) of West Point, NE, Harvey (Ruth) of DeKalb, IL, and Loraine (Kenneth) Toebben of Arlington, NE.
