William Gentrup, 88, of West Point, died Sunday September 17, 2017 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 10:30am Thursday, September 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend Steve Emanuel as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery with lunch following at the Nielsen Center. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00pm to 7:00pm with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00pm at Stokely Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to GACC Endowments or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Endowment. William Gentrup was born on June 24, 1929 to Theodore and Theresa (Spenner) Gentrup on the family farm near Beemer. He attended country school and then Guardian Angels Elementary School for the 8th grade. William continued to work on the farm until he was drafted into the United States Army for the Korean War. He began his service in 1951, serving in Korea, before being honorably discharged in 1953. On June 15, 1955, William married Geraldine Herman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. William had a passion for farming and the couple eventually settled west of West Point where they farmed before moving to town in 2006. In 2015, they moved to St. Joesph’s Retirement Community. William was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. One of his favorite activities was competing in hand cornhusking competitions where he earned several state and national titles. William and Geraldine loved to play cards and were members of a card club for 35 years. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine, of West Point; children, Debbie (Daryl) Doolittle of Cortland, Joan Gentrup of West Point, Linda (Richard) Bouc of Cortland, Donald L. Gentrup of Mesa, AZ, Susan Gentrup of Gilbert, AZ, John (Laurie) Gentrup of Golden Valley, MN, and Karen Gentrup of Brooklyn Park, MN; grandchildren, Amanda (Mike) Christenson, Holly (Mike) Showalter, Donald T. Gentrup, Joshua Gentrup, Tiffany (Brian) Messman, Bradley (Thuy) Bouc, Brandon Bouc, Will Gentrup, Brenna Gentrup, James Gentrup, and Samuel Gentrup; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Sr. Clarice Gentrup of Colorado Springs, CO, Leona Gentrup of Aurora, CO, Millie Gentrup of Hamilton, MT, and Theresa Spader of Lyons; brothers, Fred of Beemer and Ted (Doris) of West Point; sister-in-law, Rosie Gentrup of West Point; and brother-in-law, Vincent Ulrich of West Point. William is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Crystal Bouc; siblings, Cecilia (Dennis) Johnson, Catherine Ulrich, Ignatius Gentrup, and Leo Gentrup; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gentrup; and brother-in-law, Al Spader.
