Thomas Ahrens, 70, of West Point, died Thursday, September 13, 2018 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeral Service with military honors will be 11:00am on Monday, September 17 at Stokely Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Bringewatt as officiant. Lunch will follow at the Nielsen Center with burial at a later date. Visitation will be Monday from 9:00am to 11:00am at Stokely Funeral Home in West Point. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Thomas Frederick Ahrens was born on August 5, 1948 to Willis and Helen (Malchow) Ahrens in Oakland. He attended country school and graduated from Oakland High School in 1966. After attending the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy where he was a Sea Bee stationed in Okinawa. After being honorable discharged, he returned to rural Oakland. Tom fed cattle and farmed on the home place until 1995 when he began working at West Point Dairy.
Tom loved to run his Caterpillar bulldozer and metal working. Diabetes burdened Tom for most of his life but he continued to persevere and work as long as his health allowed.
Tom is survived by his children, Cindy (Tom) Ortmeier of West Point, Sherry Ahrens (Mike Anderson) of Omaha, and Michael (Ginny) Ahrens of Elkhorn; grandchildren, Bobbie and Bryan Ortmeier, and Mila and Kendall Ahrens; sister, Liz (Bob) Geisler of McCook; brothers, Bill (Karen) of Oakland, John (Mary) of West Point, James (Peggy) of Oakland, and Paul (David Holmquist) of Omaha. He is preceded in death by his parents.
